BANGLADESH: Textile exports can go up by 70% in next two years
December 26, 2007
If Bangladesh gets duty-free access to the neighboring countries and the US then the textile exports can go up by nearly 70 per cent to $US15 billion over the next two years or even higher.
The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) president Mohammad Fazlul Hoque, said that Bangladesh has earned $US9.21 billion in the fiscal year to June 2007 by exporting ready-made garments. Garments accounted for three-quarters of the country’s total export income.
Mr. Fazlul was addressing the two-day knitwear exhibition in Dhaka on Sunday. Buying delegations from Spain, the US, Germany, Britain, Canada, France, India, Hong Kong and Pakistan are attending the exhibition.
Bangladesh is in the process to get duty-free export of garments to Russia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and the member countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations.
Bangladesh was struck by a devastating cyclone on November 15 that killed nearly 3,500 people, left hundreds of thousands homeless and caused huge damage to crops, fish, homes and infrastructure.
Bangladesh has high hopes from the proposed “New Partnership and Development Act, 2007″ by the US Congress. Currently more than 30 per cent of Bangladeshi export income comes from the US, the single largest market for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh : BATEXPO concludes on happier note
December 24, 2007
The most prestigious event, the Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (BATEXPO) 2007 was concluded on November 17, at The Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. BATEXPO is the biggest clothing fair in Bangladesh and BGMEA had been organizing this expo for last 17 years uninterruptedly.Importers from 110 countries like Canada, Germany, England, America, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong participated in this exposition. Here, purchase agreement worth US $53.43 was signed with the textile and clothing manufacturers of Bangladesh, which soared by 7 percent than last year.
This year, over 3000 foreigners visited BATEXPO 2007, especially, buyers from Korea, Russia and Pakistan showed the great interest.
Apparels exported from Bangladesh accounts for only two percent of the global clothing market and experts think that since EU cancelled the quota limit on Chinese textile products from January 2008, the clothing products made in Bangladesh will face a strong competition from China, affecting country’s export.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)
December 24, 2007
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is the only government recognized trade body that represents the export oriented garment manufacturers and exporters of Bangladesh.
Starting in late 70s as a small nontraditional sector of export, Ready-made Garment (RMG) emerged as a promising export earning sector of the country by the year 1983. Bangladesh at that time lacked a sectoral trade body, non-government in nature, free from traditional bureaucracy, to help the sector to boost up the country’s foreign exchange earnings. As a result, 1977 marked the birth of BGMEA. Since its humble inception with only nineteen (19) garment manufacturers and exporters, BGMEA has grown into a strong and dynamic body. Today it is proud to have about 3500 garment manufacturers and exporters as its members.
The fundamental objective of BGMEA is to establish a healthy business environment for a close and mutually beneficial relationship between the manufacturers, exporters and importers in the process ensuring a steady growth in the foreign exchange earnings of the country. To this end, BGMEA has been playing a very strong role to lead the industry in concurrence with the government.
