Five local sweater manufacturers chosen to produce ‘Merino Wool’

July 7, 2009

Five leading Bangladeshi sweater manufacturers have been chosen to produce world class ‘Merino Wool,’ a highly value added woollen product, on behalf of Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) company, source said.

The SQ Group, Designtex Sweaters Limited, Meditex Industry Limited, Moni Fashion Limited and Pandora Sweaters Limited were selected by the well known AWI Company to produce Merino Wool, which would be displayed in international fashion shows and trade shows all over the world.

“This is a life time opportunity for our garments makers,” Golam Faruq chairman of SQ Group told the FE.

It is the first time, our garments would explore the opportunity to enter into such a high-end production, considered as the highest value added garment production all over the world, he added.

This is an initiative undertaken by the AWI Company which is responsible to promote Australian wools globally. They have selected five companies from Bangladesh for manufacturing their products, under strict quality controlled environment, said the SQ Group Chairman.

“AWI has planned to take part in number of international fashion shows in USA, EU, China and other parts of the world, in order to promote Australian wools, promoting Bangladeshi garments manufacturers alone,” he added.

This opportunity would help Bangladeshi garment makers achieve global reputation as a high value added woollen producing country which is otherwise popularly known for its low value added products, Senthil, head of Marketing of the SQ Group told the FE.

Bangladesh with GSP advantage and cheap but skilled RMG work force is very attractive for the high value added garment producers, like the Merino Wool. It is a perfect opportunity for us to promote our skills and potentials, said Mr Senthil, a Sri Lankan national.

“Globally reputed Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has the access to enter and show case their products in platforms that we can’t even dream of. Being projected as AWI product manufacturer, we are going to get the same exposure,” he added.

This would attract other high value added garment makers to invest in Bangladesh, he said.

Regarding the technological ability of Bangladeshi sweater industries, he said, “Production of traditional sweaters and Merino Wool are very similar. We just have to ensure special production environment and washing mechanism.”

“AWI will provide us adequate technology and training to obtain Woolmark-license for this particular production,” Mr Senthil said.

We are expecting to go into production within a months time, he expected.
