FMS’s exhibition coordinator Raghib Ahsan at a press briefing at EPB office said that, so far, 66 Bangladeshi firms have registered with his firm to participate in the fair. “We are expecting the rest of the participants from US-based expatriate Bangladeshi businessmen.”

He said there would be a total of 109 stalls and 5 pavilions in the exhibition with the Bangladeshi-labeled products. Most of the participants who registered for the fair are from readymade garment (RMG), knitwear, software, melamine, furniture, and real-estate sectors.

Matra’s chief executive officer Anisur Rahman Mahmud said representatives of 26 participating firms have so far obtained US visa while others are under processing.

Dhaka Textile & Garment 2009

June 9, 2008

The 6th Dhaka Int’l Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition-2009

Bangladesh has a ready market with a domestic demand for approximately 145 million people. It has a growing market. Textiles being the largest export sector of the country and the fastest growing industry with ready-made garment (RMG) accounting for more than 76% of total export earnings, Bangladesh is one of the top five RMG exporters in the world with Annual Export of RMG over US$ 7.50 billion. By 2010 the target of RMG export has been fixed at US$ 10.00 billions.

In the Private Sector there are 247 spinning mills having spindle capacity of 5.2 million, 356 waving mills having production capacity of 900 million metres of gray fabrics. Further 1137 million metres of gray fabrics are produced by semi mechanized/mechanized power looms and Hand loom units. The number of RMG factories exceed 4000 unit, employing over 4.5 million of the industrial workforce. Defying all projection as losers under the quota free regime, Bangladesh RMG export has shown an upward trend in year 2005 & 2006. Some American buyers are shifting their orders from China to Bangladesh mainly due to restrictions imposed on Chinese products under WTO safeguard mechanism. Moreover, Bangladesh enjoys the duty-free market access benefit under the ¡§Generalized System of Preference (GSP)¡¨ & Everything But Arms (EBA) from EU. She also enjoys duty-free market access to Canada, Australia, Japan, Norway & other countries.

In order to accelerate the economic development, the Bangladesh Government is keen on exploring foreign investment. The Government has announced a number of financial as well as non-financial incentives including tax holidays, unhindered repatriation of profits, withdrawal of non-tariff barriers in all respects, duty-free import of capital machinery, Cash Assistance to exporters for sourcing fabrics locally. Bangladesh also follows a very liberal and open import trade regime. It has a stable currency and the rate of inflation is also low.

Despite strong Globe competition, Bangladesh still has the ability to compete with any country in textiles and garments export. Great potential and market opportunities have led to continuous growth in textile sector over the years. Now it is the best time to project the facilities to potential investors in textiles and garments arena of Bangladesh.
